The 7 worst cat feeding mistakes that are making your cat sick
In this article, you will learn which cat feeding mistakes could lead to painful diseases. Plus, you’ll get step-by-step instructions on how to avoid these mistakes.
A cat’s build and genetic predisposition need to be taken into account when feeding!
A cat still has the build of a desert animal. This is why feeding the “cat” species commercially available food can quickly lead to deficits. (More on that later in the article.)
A cat’s build means it has very specific food requirements. If these requirements aren’t met, this can lead to a long-term nutrient deficiency in the cat. A cat’s life expectancy can be up to 20 years if they eat a healthy diet.
Malnutrition can cause the following illnesses in cats:
- joint diseases (e.g. due to a lack of nutrients),
- kidney diseases (e.g. poor kidney function), and
- intestinal diseases (e.g. IBD). These diseases may eventually lead to death.
How can you prevent these diseases and nutrient deficiencies?
To get a basic understanding of a cat’s build: cats have a very short intestine compared to dogs, and only sharp fangs.
The short intestine of cats is typical for carnivores. Animals need a much longer intestine to digest rice, corn, cereals, pasta or even potatoes (carbohydrates). If a cat is fed the wrong food, the indigestible nutritional components accumulate in the intestines and vessels. 80% of the immune system is located in the intestine. This build-up leads to long-term damage of the intestine, and can also lead to the intestinal disease IBD. A weak immune system can also facilitate other cat illnesses, such as FIP viruses, cat leukaemia and cat AIDS.
A cat’s fangs are there to tear apart prey. They don’t have flat molars, which dogs have for chewing carbohydrates, for examples. Cats don’t have an amylase enzyme either for digesting carbohydrates.
Cats get all of the energy they need for all of their daily activities from high-quality and easily digested proteins and fats.
The processes of natural self-healing through cell renewal, cell division, etc. are also completely covered by the nutrients supplied from high-quality proteins and fats.
Cats are descended from desert animals and are used to having their fluid requirements met with fresh food. This is why cats are bad drinkers. Like their ancestors, cats concentrate their urine to reduce their need for water.
To digest 100 grams of dried food, a cat would need to drink 400 ml of water. Cats only drink 60 ml per kilogram of their body weight. That’s around 250 ml per day – much too little!
If a cat is fed dried food, it will be in a constant state of dehydration and will quickly develop kidney diseases.
Typical joint diseases associated with cats can be avoided if even young cats are fed as nature intended. Unfortunately, today most nutrients are made artificially in a laboratory and then added to kitten food afterwards. These chemically produced nutrients can lead to joint diseases if consumed in excess.
When you choose a food based on the cat’s natural prey, you have a guarantee that all of the nutrients are in a balanced proportion. Even little kittens are allowed to eat from the prey that Mama Cat hunted!
What should a cat be fed to stay healthy?
A cat’s food should be perfectly adapted to their nutrient consumption geared towards prey:
-
- moist, fresh meat
- with exclusively high-quality proteins and fats
- human-grade quality
- complete without carbohydrates or starches
- with 99% meat content

CAUTION: If you buy 6 large 810 gram tins* for €28.02 instead of the 200 gram* tins, then it can last for around 24 days depending on the cat’s age. The food lasts for 3 days in the fridge, and it can also be portioned out and frozen. Which means you can feed your furry friend a truly healthy and species-appropriate diet for approx. €1.17 per day. It’s best if the food is fed for their entire life. You can make great savings long-term with the 6-pack with 6 tins*, meaning you get the low price of 58 cents per 100 grams of feed. This variety trial package* is great for figuring out your cat’s favourite flavour:
Is it true that commercial cat food is made from slaughterhouse waste?
We eat a lot of meat in the UK, and there is an incredible amount of slaughterhouse waste.
Due to legislation, this waste either needs to be incinerated, or it can be processed into cat and dog food.
What happens? Since we live under capitalism, this waste isn’t incinerated. The waste is processed into cat food. That’s why the food is so inferior.
Unfortunately, the statutory declaration obligation for cat food manufacturers has “loop holes” that mean they can show the meat content as much higher than it really is. Just like the additive list on cat food shows, there are carbohydrates added, like potatoes, rice, pasta, cereal, and chemically manufactured nutrients.
It’s better to feed cats as nature intended: with fresh meat from slaughter cattle that have been fed fresh green grass, have drunk good quality water, and have been able to stand in the sunshine in the fields.
There is no typical industrial factory farming in Sweden. Factory farming is nothing more than animal cruelty! In Sweden, slaughter cattle have the legal right to be kept in a manner appropriate to their species, which means they get fresh grass, fresh water and that they can see sunlight too!
I generally only recommend buying cat food that is produced in Sweden. Not just because the meat quality is much better. But also because they don’t give antibiotics to slaughter animals there just based on suspicion of illness. In the UK, it’s common practice to give slaughter animals antibiotics straightaway if any illness is suspected, although it’s completely unnecessary and will lead to antibiotic resistance.
So my tip is: it’s better to buy high-quality wet food from Sweden to provide the best possible support to your cat’s health.
But where can I get wed food with up to 99% meat content that is produced in Sweden and made from human-grade meat (all of the raw materials it contains are suitable for human consumption) without carbohydrates, chemical additives or colourings?
The samtohr.shop website has cat and dog food produced entirely in Sweden. The food is packaged in Germany and can be shipped to the UK for just €13.12. There’s more info on food here (click).*

FLO (FELL)
Flo is undoubtedly one of you biggest fans. Since she was invited to try the food in April 2021, she hasn’t wanted to eat any other cat food. She always had a rather rough coat. That completely changed just a few weeks after switching her food. Her fur has become super fluffy, soft and beautifully shiny. And she shed her winter coat without us even noticing. She is noticeably more alert and interested. She’s like a different cat!
If I hadn’t experienced it myself, I probably wouldn’t have believed how an animal’s diet can affect it. Factory farming meat is not the same as high-quality meat. She also loves your Snacks.
I would also like to say thank you for your really great customer service. It’s always really quick and easy to order or make changes.
Kindest regards,
Tamara Bernhardt

MY TWO MAINE COON CATS ARE FINALLY HAPPY!
My two Maine Coons, now that’s a story…
They’re only a year apart. But they’re like chalk and cheese. It was always a battle to try and find the right food. They got intestinal problems from one food, another one wasn’t nutritious enough and they didn’t touch it.
They’re quite big cats, and I think a healthy diet is important so that they stay fit and healthy. One of the cats has always had problems with her coat. She always had knots in her fur and it was greasy. Since I’ve been feeding her the new food, it’s got a lot better. She loves this good food, she’s the first to get to the bowl at feeding time, and really enjoys eating it.
My other cat is really picky, she won’t eat herring, for example. But she likes eating it mixed with salmon like in the Nautilus Ragout. But you know, sometimes we don’t like things either and that’s fine. I don’t think it’s a bad thing for animals to be picky with their food: So I will now only be feeding my cats with this food, it’s just great.
Kind regards,
Tineke Mostert from the Netherlands
ENERGETIC CATS
Dear team,
Based on the recommendations of animal lovers,
which I now also consider myself as, I wanted to do my bit to help other cat and dog lovers gain a better understanding of the positive effects of healthy food.
We switched over around half a year ago, and we’ve been able to see lots of positive developments in our cats in just this short amount of time.
Like their activity levels for example, which have really developed into a positive since changing their food. Before, the cats spent almost all day lying around and sleeping, whereas now they play a lot, cuddle up, and also spend lots of time outside moving around.
Another positive development is that our tomcat used to pull out a lot of his fur, sometimes in tufts, but this has now been reduced to a minimum since he only gets this healthy cat food.
All in all, our cats are happier, more active, and fitter since changing their food.
I would recommend that every owner that cares about their pet at least think about whether they want to change the food. I believe your pet will thank you.
Thanks again.
Kind regards,
Marc van der Linden & Sarah Insberg
